keep in mind the following ...
1) size of the room you are filling with sound
2) where would the speakers be located within the room (i.e. in corners, against walls, away from walls etc... ) as this can greatly impact the sound of the speaker and the type of speaker you should consider
3) the efficiency of the speakers you are looking at.. as this will determine, along with the size of the room .. how much power you will need from the receiver...
4) as suggested.. the "wife acceptance factor" is a huge consideration.. can you really go with a large floor standing model.. or perhaps a good set of monitor speaker on some low profile stands.. (add a sub later?)
5) think of growth.. Now you say it will be 99% music ..but are you going to quickly change your mind in the future.. and regret your decision not to buy a receiver that has home theater capabilities ????
6) don't neglect the interaction of how certain speakers sound with certain receivers.. which is why listening to them together is an important factor...bringing in music you are familiar with, as well as listening to music that tests the system (female vocals, acoustic piano, full orchestra, good bass and drum passages, etc.)
6) if you go with new equipment.. then you have limited options, and would probably be best sticking to the mainstream stuff .. Receivers by HK, Denon, and Yamaha are the most popular choices..but Onkyo and NAD (if you can find one in that range) are good choices as well...
7) speakers .. wider variety of options here.. really depends on the type of music you prefer.. as speakers are a very personal decision.. some like a dry realistic sound (monitors).. while others like a warmer sound with good midbass.. while others are mid/high freaks....
happy hunting...
