One thing that I find particularly troubling about drug research these days is that front-line research is funded by the pharmaceutical companies. Not that I have a solution, but it seems that a scientist knowing where their funding is coming from *could* influence them to create studies/reports/progress that echo what the drug companies want to hear so that the grant money keeps coming.
We know that a new drug costs billions of dollars to develop and bring to market, and to me, more money invested always means a higher TENDENCY to cut corners, falsify data, and sell things that aren't really there. I'm thinking that our capitalist society really needs to rethink how we approach the scientific process so that we are able to remove the influence (direct or indirect) of the funders on those who spend the money to conduct research.
I may not have explained this particularly well, but I do believe that the potential for such influence exists. To what extent, I'm not sure.
Just my two cents.
