I'm surprised the usually reasonable and even erudite Saab community would even hesitate about this issue. Public vaccination is second only to clean drinking water in importance in saving lives and eliminating illness. Yes, there are occasional unintended consequences but the balance of benefit to the individual and society is overwhelmingly positive. It's not even close. I am not a supporter of big farma, but I will not twist objective fact to make them out as baddies.
It has been increasingly unlikely that any of you has seen these diseases which are now so well controlled (in the US) by vaccination. Measles and mumps are not funny childhood rites of passage, but they can leave life-long residuals; polio was terrible;some forms of childhood osteomyelitis have disappeared; rubella baby deformities are now very rare;. You have no idea of the terror of a parent whose child develops whooping cough.
Some folks think mercury and vaccination is causally linked to all kinds of other conditions. That connection has been scrutinized by bright, honest people and no link was found. Several conditions like autism and lymphoma (I have that) have been found to have an increasing frequency over years or decades. The cause is being sought and will be found, but that is no reason to invent boogymen.
Be very thankful you live in the age of rational medicine. Get vaccinated, vaccinate your children.
