You get a newer one (by newer I mean '94 and up) for around the same as an NG900, and the 9000 is, IMO, a better car.
I have a '95 9000 with 140,000 miles that I use to commute in occasionally (40 miles each way), but I don't have to commute every day. Also have a '96 900SE with around 90,000 miles, but I just feel more comfortable in the 9000. The interior of the 9000 feels much more solid (like the C900) than the New Gen and it's a much better highway car.
That said, the New Gen is a great, reliable car (look for '96 or newer only) that you'd definitely enjoy. I think with a Classic, I'd just feel too nervous about doing 150 miles each day...but I'd feel confident with either a 9000 or an NG900...just make sure they're well maintained, and have a Saab indy check it out before you buy.
