I switched to Vonage for my home office line in December. Works fine and has some nice call forwarding features that work very well. Unless you need the unlimited service at $25/mo, just get the basic (500 mins for $15). That covers U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico. (But a colleague is a US ex-pat living in Dominican Republic and she uses her NH phone number down there, since she got Vonage before leaving.)
I have Adelphia for cable TV and broadband internet, but our house landline is still Verizon and many VOIP users still have a landline, bcz if you lose power you still have a phone, while with VOIP no power = no router = no phone. We have cell phones, too, also Verizon. FYI, E911 still works most places with VOIP, but check with the provider.
I may try Vonage's "Softphone" later this month when I go to Germany. That just runs off the computer using a headset. But there's another computer-based one called GizmoProject that I'm looking at as well.
