I had no idea that a Sonata was capable of speeds like that! The story got me curious enough to look at Hyundai's website to see what kind of equipment comes on a Sonata. This car must have been equipped with the 3.3l engine, power is not clear on the website (units are interchanged), but it's obviously sufficient to propel the car faster than you need to go. But contrary to the police statement that the tires were not capable of running at 147 mph, the 2006 model comes standard with V-rated tires, good up to 149 mph - I'm sure the driver must have had this in mind and limited his speed accordingly.
You can't buy publicity like this, it certainly helps Hyundai shake their image as a producer of cheap, underpowered econoboxes. Perhaps they should pay the driver's legal defense expenses!
