"Just because a car can achieve those high speeds doesn't mean it's designed to go that fast. What if he had to make a sudden correction, to avoid some animal on the road or something?"
Where did I say that it was ok for him to go fast in his Hyundai? I wrote a response to your categorical statement "147 mph on a public road is reckless. In fact most european cars don't just loose control when you make high speed avoidance manouvres (unless you're completely incompetent). It's not like SUVs and softly sprung american RWD cars that practically turn over or spin out of control at standard highway speeds if you do so.
My point was that it's not reckless and dangerous per se to drive at that speed, IF your car is capable of doing so without loosing control etc(all the faster Saabs are).
I don't live in the US so I can't say what the highways are like, but I hardly think they are built that much differently than the autobahns. The autobahns aren't magical highways or built like a racetrack. I've driving on them frequently and they are pretty similar to the highways here in Denmark where the speed limits are much lower. So the only difference here is that it's been politically decided that going faster is dangerous.
"Why do you assume there was no other traffic? Sure it was early in the morning on a Sunday, but that doesn't mean there were no other cars on the road, just that it wasn't commute hours. Phoenix and Scottsdale are not rural, unpopulated areas."
I didn't say there was no traffic. In fact I didn't talk about that particular incident. I said that IF there is no traffic it's not reckless or dangerous.
