After a history of 6 Volvos and endless expensive maintenence, I checked CR (as I have for every car I've ever bought) and found the reports on the Saab 2001 9-5 so favorable, I decided to check it out. I never knew another Saab owner, nor considered a Saab, so really, it's all Consumer Reports' credit that I found my way to Saab. So bash CR all you want, but Saab now has a two-time customer/cheer leader in me...-just sold the wonderful 2001 and bought another 2006 9-5 SportCombi.

I have to defend another thing.. if it weren't for CR's potent reports on safety over all these years, I doubt we'd all be as safe in our Saabs or any other car today. They are virtually the only forum for the display of crash test results.. and it's so important!

If the 9-3 is getting funky reports, it's really Saab's fault. The car is hardly new, so teething probs should be w-e-l-l behind them and any problem is an opportunity to learn about how to engineer better, so with the 9-3's history, there's no good reason it should still be causing problems. Maybe CR is giving the tough love this great car company needs to hear?

Lastly, to back up my fondess for CR, I'll add that they've been right about all these cars I've owned: Honda Civic: 10 out of 10. Volvo: so-so, to problematic. BMW: Mostly great, but some small issues. 2003 MINI: Utter unreliable junk. VW Golf: Pure crapola. Saab 9-5: Solid, mostly reliable (except for that lame sunroof deflector).

The good news is that with any car, we research, then buy what we feel passion for. Then we [with hope] tolerate the imperfect, to enjoy a safe, fun car. In that light, this won't damage the Saab 9-3 too much.
