The 9-5 has had a 'CR Recommend Pick' rating for years and average relability , satisfaction, and depreciation ratings. In discussions of the 9-5 the CR ratings are taken and presented as evidence of why the 9-5 is a great choice. I believe the orignal 9-3 had similar results.

The 9-3 SS has taken more than it's share of relability hits from just about anyone rating it and many of it's owners as well. That doesn't mean it is a bad car. The rating process maybe flawed but to some extent all cars are in similar position. Well not exactly but within a class it should be pretty close and can provide INSIGHT.

If you look at the model year information for the current 9-3 you will find it is improving significantly even in the CR ratings. It did pretty miserable in 2003, slightly less so in 2004, and for 2005 big turn around and really looks pretty darn good. For 2005 the only solid black spot left is electrical (an area a fair number of similar cars do poorly also). It has worse than average for 'body integrity' and 'power equipment'. That is it for the black. There is nothing that is average; everything else is better or much better than average (in fact 9 of the remaing 12 areas are much better than average). I think this matches what deep down what many of us know; the early cars from day one had some issues. Although the 9-3 seemed to have a particularly bad showing this pattern of notable improvement after the first couple years seems sort of typical for SAAB.

If 2006 is similar to 2005 I'd expect CR to modify their rating. When looking at data simple summaries are a problem especially with something as complicated as a car. The CR 9-3 relability ratings show the power of looking at trends as well.

For general car ratings a set of category ratings is better than an overall rating b/c different people put different weights on things. I think this is particularly true for many posting here compared to the general population. A different organization and more detailed information in most consumer directed ratings would be helpful. That way one can evalute what is important to them. If nothing else you can always find something that supports your take on things that way ;-).
