There seems to be a difference in how Toyota responds verses other manufacturers. I think Toyota acknowledges the problem and is working to resolve it. Every manufacturer is going to have problems, the biggest challenge is how much and how quickly they respond to those issues.
It will be interesting if Toyota follows a similar path that GM and Sears followed when they were big, getting too large to manage properly. Personally, I think Toyota is too big right now and offering too many vehicles. They need to trim down the number of models and focus intently on those they keep.
My 1996 Corolla was one of the best cars I've owned in terms of reliability. It went 180k miles and required $30 in repairs outside of regular maintenance. That said, I don't think I would buy another Toyota any time soon; they just don't make anything that appeals to me and the last Camry I rented I though was horribly assembled.
