...not that I recommend it, but it allows more tire surface to grip the ice. When you are stuck you are sunk in enough. You need to get purchase on the ice surface, not cut down further into the snow drift in a misguided attempt to sink down to the pavement. Once you are free you need to re-inflate ASAP.
When I 4-wheel-drive and one of us gets stuck in the sand, we deflate to 15-20 PSI and drive out. Once back on the road we re-inflate ASAP. That is sand and mud though, so I am not sure if I am mixing apples with oranges. I carry a snow shovel so if my Saab gets stuck I just dig. Someday maybe I will get a Limited Slip for my 900 SiS, but right now I am more inclined to stick with my 4WD in the deep snow.
