Right now the situation on PPC(PDA) phone in general is sort of like owning a Saab..the experience may not be too pleasant if you are not willing to get your hands dirty and learn about the nature of the beast. However, that's the downside and the upside is it could do almost anything, even some things you never thought you would do with a phone. However, there'll be quite a bit of difference in functionality between having a constant high speed data service and not having one.

I have been using a PPC phone similar to the one you're considering for the past 4 months or so. My impression on using these devices is that they are still quite clunky compared to regular phones. The most powerful ones like the HTC are MS Windows based, and MS doesn't seem to build an OS with much emphasis on stability. I read most users including me have to reboot at least once a day which may take anywhere from 1 min to 2 min. Besides the annoyance, i actually have missed an important call because the phone had frozen up without me knowing.

If reliability is a huge factor for you, I wouldn't recommend one. But, it could also be that so many of those users including me maybe trying to do too much with the phone, which is hard to resist as Chadwick mentioned.

Now the good part.
I frequently use the phone for the following functions:
Get realtime email
Organize w/ schedules (calender), reminder, notes, etc.
Check weather condition with moving radar images
Get most of my news from the RSS reader (w/full articles)
Listen to internet radio stations from all over the world and my own music
3D navigation w/ voice on TomTom software inside car
Search businesses on Google map
Browse internet and play games at times
Skype for free international calls
Hookup to laptop anywhere for DSL speed internet connection

Now there are tons more features people use like watching live TV streaming from your home and so on, but you get the idea.

If you can keep in mind you are in it for the things that can enhance your productivity and not get bogged down by the initial learning curve, I think you'll enjoy it a lot. Good luck!
