Having a converged device is great. I've used a BlackBerry 7100/7130 for over a year and love having email/calendar/web browsing/Google maps with me all the time. It's EDGE only, which is a real 150Kbps. I don't tether to a laptop and run 10MB to 20MB data traffic a month. People I know who tether, or who stream Internet radio, can do five times that much or more. Cingular charges a lot for data beyond what's in your plan ($20 per MB) so choose your plan carefully.
The 8525 has UMTS/HSDPA, which should give a real 500Kbps - 700Kbps data speeds where Cingular has implemented coverage. Where not it drops back to EDGE. It's also truly a world phone and should give similar capabilities almost anywhere.
The 8525 is WM5 (WM6 has just been announced), which is more stable than previous versions but still needs rebooting once or twice a week. I've heard similar things about Treos running Palm OS. I've rebooted my BB twice in 15 months.
Note the 8525 seems not to have music capabilities or memory expansion. There are other smart phones that do if that's important. Also check about battery life. I haven't heard anything about this phone, but battery life on Blackjacks is so bad Cingular is offering free extra capacity batteries to people who've bought one.
