We all know GM doesn't need additional manufacturing capacity, and the overall conditions of Chrysler's factories are widely known in automotive circles to be the worst in the rust belt (other than the new Jeep factories).
GM's bid may have been strictly to block Shanghai Automotive, Cherry Automotive, Hyundai, et al., from acquiring Chrysler's distribution network at brankruptcy prices to sell their own vehicles via an instantaneous national presence.
