Lots of good points in this discussion. Thanks to all. Since the "where you live" seems relevant to some, here's some details.
In a state that is barely 100 years old, an 80 year old house is very old; few in town are older. In Oklahoma, they were still building sod houses in 1900. The house is in a great location, sure to be desirable to new owners.
Few changes have been made in the house, and all, I think, have maintained the essence of the original house. The back porch has been enclosed into a sun room, but the windows are in keeping with the rest of the house; the single upstairs bathroom has been converted into two; the screen doors have been replaced with storms; the kitchen has been totally redone but the cabinets are in keeping with the age of the house.
As an aside, here's a cool feature of this place. The game room in the basement was finished in knotty pine, walls and ceiling. In the '30s, the original owner's daughter told us, it was a popular place for weekend dances. The kids took to writing their names on the pine, and the tradition kept going. We have 75 years worth of kids names on our walls in the basement; very cool.
