In Alaska where worst flying conditions are common, the air carriers here fly Saab 340's. There hasn't been a Dash-7 here in many years, and never any Dash-8's at all. Just saw a pic of the Dash-8 that crashed and it looks scary - too high wing loading, looks like a plane that lands too fast. An aircraft designed to keep up with jet traffic at major hubs. Here in Alaska we travel commercial in Boeing 737's and Saab 340's - smaller planes are Piper Chieftain and Cessna Caravan. I blame the FAA, airport operations, and American cultural keeping up with time. The problem of having 'commuter planes' operating for the same airport as jet planes here has proven to be unresolved. I say the hub-spoke operations are dangerous because of the difference of how different types of aircraft fly.
In Alaska a Bombardier is a tracked land vehicle; a muskeg carrier. Bombardier also makes Ski-doo's (personal snow machines).
I've been able to walk away from 5 aircraft crashes in my life (3 fixed, 2 rotory), so...Don't take a plane in bad weather when ground transportation is an option.
That new model Dash-8 is a scary looking, high wing-load aircraft. Here in Alaska we trust Saab 340's due to safer flight characteristics.
That said, my favorate sky-ride is a DHC-3 Otter Turbine conversion, and I've always thought Canada to be a good idea.
Prayers to the survivers. The Alaska Airlines 727 and the MD-80 crashes left wholes culture here.
Saab 340. Google it.
