The DASH-7 was a four engine plane known for it's quiet operation and superior short take-off and landing ability, which allowed airlines to service smaller airports. Airlines weren't fans of the DASH-7 because the four engines required twice the maintenance and a bit more fuel, that's why DHC developed the DASH-8. The SAAB 340, et. al. were all introduced after the DASH series in order to compete with it.
I don't think this crash had much to do with the aircraft, but rather its deicing equipment. pneumatic boots don't last for ever, and can easily tear. Pilots are supposed to inspect them before each flight. It's possible that the pilot didn't notice a small tear before departing and it became exasperated under heavy icing. This may explain witness reports too.
