I went with Olympus

Canon and Nikon are clearly the Big Two in digital SLRs, but after trying them both out at all sorts of price points, I decided (after MUCH deliberation) to go with Olympus. I spent six years selling 35mm cameras in a specialty retailer and had always been a Nikon guy, but to me, the Olympus had three definite advantages: it is smaller than the others (as are its lenses), it has live view, and it has image stabilizer in the body rather than in lenses. To others, those things might not matter; to me, they outweighed the disadvantages (such as having a smaller processor). I got the E520 with two zooms, a 28-85 equivalent and an 80-300 equivalent, but I shoot the shorter one almost exclusively and then crop (I'd probably get the E620 were I buying today). I've been pleased with the camera and the results. I'll post a link to our Flickr album from the most recent trip; some of the photos are from a Canon P&S, the others from the Oly.
