If you can't get the socket in there (there are various styles with different size nuts), then you would need to grind down the outside of an 11/16" socket so that it would fit inside. You could also look for a thin-wall socket, but I've actually never seen or heard of one that will fit such an application. If you do decide to go ahead with the handle replacement, here are a couple of tips.
1) crank the wrench to the top of the scale first. This will put a load on the load screw and make it unlikely to turn while you're removing the nut.
2) take it apart slowly and carefully, and watch for parts falling out. I'm not sure what comes in the replacement kit, but most likely there are two tiny ball bearings inside the handle that form the locking mechanism. The parts diagram doesn't make it clear what style of lock it is.
