Don't know where you are in NJ but pretty muchanyplace is within 3 hrs of NYC so I suggest you leave real early and go through NYC on I-95. If you clear the Cross Bronx by 7:00 on a weekend you should be good to go. Or skirt NYC on I-287 and pick up I-95 in Westchester County or CT (after getting on the Merritt Pky). Then pick up I-195 in Providence. Or if I-195 construction is too much, get on Rt 138 in RI and go across the Jamestown / Newport bridges across Narragansett Bay to Newport and then pick up Rt 114 to Rt 24 where you could get I-195 in Fall River. Seems the routes up to Central Mass. and I-495 are way too long, IMHO.
