I'd challenge that comparison against Civic mileage. I've averaged low-30s over all kinds of weather & all kinds of driving in the 2007 Civic coupe. But when you talk about a single highway trip, it's easily 38 & my maximum is just over 42mpg.
For the 2003 Accord, it was ALWAYS 30 or so, with highway trips around 35 or 36, and I averaged 40 on one long trip to North Carolina moving my daughters stuff.
Still, I agree that my Saabs have gotten very nice numbers. Driving alongside the Accord on the same NC trip, our 2001 9³ got more like 38. I did good driving to the Hershey PA convention, about 39 or so.
But try the same gas-saving tricks on a Civic, I bet you'll always get better than the Saab.
