A friend of mine has a 2009 forester but it's a stick. He claims to average close to 30mpg, but he also drives smoother + a little slower than I do, and that is without the bikes... but I bet the stick makes a big difference there: a 4 speed subaru automatic = a c900 3 speed automatic (except perhaps in longevity)... ok, maybe a 3.2 speed... funny thing is EPA numbers for Forester + 9-5 are about the same. I'm starting to think the EPA numbers don't reflect real life very well (I did better than EPA in the 9-5 at 75mph)...
I've been wondering how much fuel hit I get for the bike rack drag... I know it goes up nonlinearly with increasing speed (esp 75+mph), but not sure the actual impact... there's enough apples-oranges that I can't really compare the 1989 numbers to the 1993... someday I'll get the data!
