The 9-3X could, potentially, be the savior of the new Saab. Right now there are only a handful of AWD wagons in the US. Subaru, Audi, Volvo, and BMW pretty much fill the list. There is little in between the Subaru and the Volvo, if Saab can successfully position the 9-3X here and still make a profit on it, they could make a small fortune. One only has to look at sales of the Outback and XC-70 to see it is a desirable model type.
Of course, Saab has a choice to make. They can be profitable by selling volume, or profitable by selling low volumes at a profit. By selling high volumes they are going to have to stick to more conventional cars. If they can develop desirable cars that they sell at a profit, then they can also make money by selling fewer of those.
Personally, I think there are too many cars on the market now for Saab to sell any conventional cars at a high profit. And I think the high-end luxury market is tapped and too out of reach to work, either. I would like them to go back to the routes of being an affordable, well thought out, well enginnered car. Something that people invest in, anot just purchase. Sure, they wont corner the market, but they will keep their following and I think they could stay afloat.
