I've got a Motive pressure bleeder, but I always pumped the pedal for years before I bought that thing.
Yeah, I've heard all the same things about stroking the MC all the way down. It's never caused a problem for me, but I understand the paradox.
When you get air in the MC, bench-bleeding is how you work it out. But bench-bleeding IS stroking the MC all the way down. I suspect the full strokes are a problem when the brake fluid hasn't been changed in years.
My suggestion was to bleed by pumping first, to work the bubbles out of the MC into the tubing. Then use the pressure bleeder to push the bubbles out.
If you want to try pushing "uphill", try what I've done. Remove the reservoir-cap-adapter from the hose, then you have just a hose coming out of the Motive bottle. You'll probably need a smaller tube inside the Motive tube (with a hose clamp) then put the smaller tube directly on the bleeder valve of the caliper. You don't need to mess with a syringe or something like that since you already own a pressure bleeder.
