Since we've lived in WMSBG, VA for the past 38 years, we have been to the Outer Banks at least a dozen times -- in fact, one of my colleagues used to own a rental house which she let us use free during the period before the busy season (February or early March) and we really loved that time of year there. Nowadays, it's becoming a family tradition to gather at a big rental house in Corolla during the Labor day weekend and the week after -- all five of our kids and their spouses and our grandkids. We've only had a tropical storm problem once. Just after you get off the bridge from the mainland, there is a big Harris Teeter supermarket and other supply stores. But the area is oriented toward relaxing on the beaches, flying kites with the grandkids, etc., not carousing all night in a big city style.
Do not miss the Wright Brothers museum if you have any interest in the birth of aero engineering beyond a 3 year old level -- the information on their discovery of the wing warp principle of aircraft control is explained much better than in the Smithsonian (or used to be -- I haven't stopped there for a few years). Also go down to Roanoke and other sites farther south for historical info.
There is a Catholic Church down by Kitty Hawk and several other varieties nearby for Sundays (or Saturdays) which are open until mid-September.
