First, put the radar detector in the trunk while crossing Virginia. The police are no longer allowed to confiscate or destroy, but they can issue a citation for use. Frankly, it's not worth the hastle and when I had one, I just put it away while driving in my home state (Virginia). US 58 which crosses the state just north of the North Carolina border is known for enthusiastic traffic law enforcement, so be careful if you choose that route. If you travel down I-64 toward where I live in the Hampton Roads area, watch out for drivers trying to defy the laws of physics. It's very congested and too many people try to occupy the same space at the same point in time.
I enjoy the lighthouses along OBX. The Wright Brothers Memorial is also worth the trip, and Ocracoke has a certain charm about it. Manteo is also interesting. The beaches, kayaks, flying kites, and relaxing outdoors has been mentioned. Don't get in a hurry and you will enjoy OBX.
