After all, the military trains all kinds of people to do stuff. That's what the Israelis do. It wouldn't be easy but it certainly could be done. Some would do the real screening, the rest would still be drones.
But the people being trained also matter. They need to have a bit more between the ears than the average TSA employee. The chubby wannbe cops and McDonald's washouts presently manning TSA checkpoints don't seem to have what it takes.
I sat with a sky marshal on a flight about a year ago and noticed how he eyeballed everybody getting on the plane. We talked about it and the things he looked for. People could certainly be trained to do the on-the-ground screening.
