Just to clarify two things, this was in Canada, so it wasn't the TSA but their Canadian counterpart. I suspect they are strongly influenced by the TSA. They didn't actually try to take it away from me; the comment was from a security guard (the guy who stands there looking intimidating and whose job is presumably to physically restrain someone). The person "in charge" was deciding between letting me on the plane and not letting me on the plane. In the end, after a delay of 30 minutes they decided to confiscate my AA batteries and the plastic holder, but let me keep my dvd player. So I guess the lesson for would-be hijackers is to install your bomb inside a dvd player, but don't power it externally with AA batteries.
I suppose every airport is different. I had no problem with the exact same device in the Calgary airport, but ironically the much smaller London airport is where I had the problem. This was a year ago, maybe it would be worse today.
