And even 16" is just fine in the real world of rail crossings, potholes, deteriorating bridges and roads, etc. The difference in normal day-to-day driving isn't worth the trade-offs IMHO. For track or autocross, yeah, go bigger, but for the street it's just bling.
On a trip west last summer I saw a family with a big SUV and a flat tire on huge chrome rims watch the beast get hauled onto a flat bed. The tire might have been all of 35-series. I guess it looked cool if you like the rubber band tire look, but (judging from their license plates) they were 500 miles or so from home and looking at a pricey new tire and an interruption in their trip.
In a tire store a few years back I saw an older couple turn pale when they heard the price of some new 18" tires for their SUV because it came with some fancy option package.
