For whatever reason I was born into a family of avid pianists. My grandmother played piano. My father and sisters play piano. My wife plays piano, and my oldest son plays piano (I'll avoid nephews and nieces because the list just grows and...). I played the trumpet and euphonium which are much easier to transport. Anyway, when we move a piano we prefer to rent a truck from Penske or UHaul that has a lift. If you have to move it any distance across a floor or from the porch to the truck, placing the piano on a piano dolly will help. I have one that I bought at Lowes and they are good for moving heavy pieces of furniture. You will need at least 4 sets of strong arms and legs (be careful with the backs) to do the lifting. Once you lift the piano into the truck, I take it off the dolly and place it on 3 or 4 evenly spaced 4x4 pieces of wood. The 4x4 pieces should be wider than the piano. Most upright pianos have wheels and this keeps it from rolling around. Using very strong ratcheting straps, strap the piano to a solid tie down on the side and floor of the van to keep it from moving or falling over. I normally place a strap low to prevent movement and another up higher to help it stay upright. I suggest you measure your door openings at your house and the piano to make sure it will fit before moving the piano. Don't ask me how I know that but I learned about it when I was much younger and less experienced. If it is to be played, you will need to have it tuned after it is in place.
