quite a few of them in New York City area as well. Columbia, Cornell (Med School is in NYC), Mount Sinai, NYU, Albert Einstein, as well as the SUNY system. Also across the river, you have UMDNJ. Some of these are not big-name schools but certainly have reasonable reputation and many are a train ride away from New Haven.

I also tend to agree with Chaz about keeping a relationship (long distance or otherwise) when both are in high pressure situations (grad school and medical school). Let me just say statistics aren't in your son's favor but I have seen a few that worked out in the end as well.
