I'm sure Brown and UConn are too, I've just never heard much about them.
UMass has built a very solid rep, both at its Amherst campus (I went there) and for the med school in Worcester.
Yale is well, Yale. It's Ivy League and does a first-class job. Harder to get into probably.
UConn and UMass are state schools. Admission is slightly easier, and they cost less, but I don't think the quality of education is much different than what you'd find at Yale.
FWIW, the big state universities in New England are excellent schools, both undergrad and graduate. I had an economics professor at UMass who had moved there after 20 years at Yale. He told me one day when we were talking about this, that he could see no real difference in the quality of education. Similarly, a close friend's dad was a world-renown physics professor at Cornell for 25 years. Retired, moved to western Mass, began teaching at UMass Amherst. Had the same conversation with him that I'd had with me econ professor when at school, only 20+ years later.
The difference, I think, is that some employers think a Harvard or Yale degree means the person holding it is better educated. So the Ivy degree opens doors. And provides a better post-school network.
Good luck to your son (and his fiance). New England is a great place to live and go to school.
