I think the important thing is that, at his age, your son will find his way just fine. I take issue with those who say that, to become a successful physician, you have to sacrifice all. I think that can make you an unsuccessful physician and an unhappy person. As a physician, I have met and worked with plenty of other physicians, and I can say that quality and knowledge base seem to be poorly correlated with where they went to medical school. Not un-correlated, just poorly correlated. Even in the same medical school, you see wide variations among the students. I have no insider knowledge of any of the schools you mentioned (sorry - I know that was the whole point of your question), but one of the things any applicant should look for is evidence of opportunity to work directly with attending physicians during the clinical years. At some of the big programs, their attention to hierarchy ensures that the medical students are the farthest from the action. Students interact with the interns, who interact with the residents, who interact with the fellows, who interact with the attendings, who interact with God. Just kidding about that; some of them believe they are God.
If he has a clear idea of why he has chosen medicine, can articulate that clearly in the application process, and has shown a good record of accomplishment, he should feel confident of being admitted. I would recommend that he stay close to his fiancee. A better human makes a better doctor.
