We don't realize how spoiled we are with Saab seats. I notice this every time I have to put some hours and miles on a rental car. Then I get into my 9K or my wife's 9-5 and it's a different world.
What I don't understand is why the majority of cars have such poor seats. Think about it: All seats have a metal frame that connects to floor and moves in various directions. All seats have foam padding with cloth or leather coverings. The amount and quality of materials vary from car to car, but why is the difference so great?
The better foam and padding (and design) used in say, a Saab or a Volvo, cannot possibly be hugely more expensive than the stuff used in cars with less comfortable seats. And in the context of the total cost of a car --given that this stuff is all mass produced-- the delta between lousy seats and good ones simply can't be all that great. Even if the better materials are 2 or 3 times the cost of typical seats its can't possibly make a big difference in the cost of a car (bean counters likely differ on this).
OTOH, my wife (who has a tender back) says a softer ride is more important. This is why she doesn't like the ride in my 9K with its performance-oriented tires, and why I need to get a soft touring tire for her 9-5. But I'm pretty sure she'd complain if I put her in a Toyota for 4-5 hours!
