About three or four years ago I was driving a rented Dodge Charger in Maryland on the way to Ocean City. Doing 65 in a 55 when around a bend the road narrowed and the only things I saw were the 30 mph sign and the police car on the other side of the road pointed at me. I pulled over immediately and waited. The police officer was reasonbly courteous, but informed me that driving more than 30 mph over the limit is reckless driving in MD, thousands in fines, 3 months in jail, etc.
It was right about then that our beloved old English Cocker Spaniel jumped up from the back seat where she had been sleeping and started showering me with kisses all over the side of my face. The PO just stood there and watched for a moment, then a smile slowly appeared across his stern face. He asked me what kind of dog it was, how old, etc.
This went on for a minute or two. Then he handed me back my license and registration, told me to slow down and drive carefully while in his state, and sent me on my way. He even pulled out and stopped traffic behind us so that I could pull out safely.
I miss that old dog.
