When it comes to these kinds of scenarios, where school activities are involved in particular, everybody's got an opinion and practically no one is happy with the outcome. I taught in a public school for 32 years, retired now these 9 years last May, and thank the good God for that.

First, as far as the school is concerned if you are at one of these parties it's not guilt by "association," it's guilt because you were there. At our school for anyone in an extracurricular activity it would mean automatically being kicked out for the season (or for any upcoming season that school term). No questions, no arguments, no were-you-drinking, etc.

It certainly seemed hard to some parents I could mention when their little snowflake was out of football, or band, or drama for the year. Tough. I went back far enough to remember the old days of the 1970's, when it was pretty much political. Twenty kids busted at a kegger, but you knew who wouldn't be booked, regardless of who the cops caught: school board members' kids, anyone highly enough connected in a small enough community.

My favorite story, from a neighboring district around 1975, was a bunch of student athletes caught drinking on the team bus, dead to rights. There were eight, and fortunately for them one of the eight was the school board president's son. The lot were suspended from school for a week, but a special teacher's meeting was held, and teachers were told that they would give no tests, quizzes, or assign anything with an evaluative outcome that week. So the eight got a week's vacation from school, and zero otherwise.

And: to pre-answer the inevitable question: yes, the courts have ruled that the schools DO have authority outside of school hours and off school property. Whether that pleases everyone or not.
