if the $5k item cost $10k with warranty, would you still want the warranty?
I do get it though, that for a $5 item, you could just buy another... warranty is insurance... you should only insure what you can not afford to replace...
but a car warranty is really only insurance against repairs, not the full value of the vehicle... so, even for $30k (which may be a lot to replace out of pocket) discounted $15k without warranty: what is the likelihood of $15k of repair work (that otherwise would be warranty covered) at an indy? (imho virtually zero)
I think it partly comes down to: the original price of the car is too steep... the discount is discounting the car, not just the warranty... the buyer has to decide how much to weigh each... if you really love the car and would pay $45k with warranty, it seems bizarre to me to not be willing to risk $30k without warranty... if you need an outstanding deal on the car itself + discounting for the warranty... then you need to wait longer + the market will decide if you get one!
