Well, I was gonna suggest a chimney but N/A for you. But here goes just for anyone else...
This didn't result in CO, but it easily could have if it happened during heating season.
Furnace chimney was steel duct sticking out the roof, with a little cone-shaped "top-hat" on top I guess to keep the rain out. That top-hat was attached with 3 posts & riveted. One post broke loose, corrosion or whatever.
The 2 remaining posts acted like a "hinge" so when the wind direction was right, the top-hat would flip upwards, and direct the wind down into the chimney. I noticed it by the sound. It was flapping with a tinny sound. Almost like someone shaking a box filled with small air-duct tubing. Downstairs, I could feel air blowing OUT from the furnace, where it normally would draw combustion air into the burner chamber. During heating season, that would have resulted in a basement full of combustion products.
Anyway, it was late evening, but it was easy enough to get up onto the roof. I tore off the top-hat entirely, then next week I looked & found a replacement for that chimney top.
Hope it helps someone avoid a problem...
