Called a Grid Drain or Vessel Drain it will easily handle all the water that might get splashed out of the tub. It is the same size as the drain in the bathroom sink so it will connect with standard 1-1/2 or 1-1/4 inch PVC.
I know this is much larger than what you originally mentioned but this will actually drain away the water and can be easily made water tight to the ceramic tile surround. Just locate it out of sight lines. Anyone who sees it will instanly know it is intended to be there to drain the tub platform. A 1/2 inch drain might just look like a careless hole.
