Locked out! A minor rant.

So my wife and I are returning the Nissan Versa buzzbox we'd rented for a day in San Diego. We'd been out there for a week at a conference so had two big bags and two small ones. The small ones were in the back seat.
The crummy little Versa has no inside trunk release that I could find so I get out of the car with the key to open the trunk. I pull the bags out of the trunk and put the key back in the ignition so the Hertz guy can check the mileage and get us out of there. I close the driver's door... and the car locks all the doors automatically.... with two of our bags still in the back seat. The back seat doesn't fold so we can't get in through the trunk so we wait for a tech to come over to get in with a wedge, a door bladder bag, and a long wire. We had some breathing room for the plane so we were fine, but this is ridiculous!
What the hell is it with a car that locks its doors with the key in the ignition and the engine off? How many people will get locked out of these little sheetboxes? I can just imagine this happening to someone on a hot summer day with an infant in the backseat. Or someone being stranded someplace because the car decided to lock its doors.
Does anyone know how many other cars do this kind of thing?
