depends a little how you drive. I find averaging 120km/h (70mph) I get around 30-32mpg highway only in a non-overloaded 2004 arc with the stock tires. loaded down with bikes on the back and roof rack and ski box on top + lots of gear, it was a lot worse, closer to 23-25mpg. All US gallons here.
It's funny because I hear the ads for some Mazda SUV - xover (non-hybrid, just an optimized system), claiming 56 mpg... but this is Canada, so that is probably imperial (ie 45mpg which is still good)... anyway good for them for making a really efficient SUV. hopefully they've solved the rust problems along with that... but my point being that they claim the same sort of thing as norm was saying - who needs hybrids that are not very functional + don't save much gas vs other new cars anyway... maybe they are right!
personally for me it's the driving experience. The prius is an econobox with a fairly lofty pricetag, that is unappealing to drive. Make a real car (like a 9-5 or 9-3) that is a hybrid (even pure EV), and non-unobtanium (stratospheric price) and I am definitely interested. This might take a while the way things are going.
