if you're shorting to ground with a resistor, then too low a resistance will cause too much current to flow - the extreme case would be a complete short, and that could damage the output of the source (head unit) unless it has some sort of short circuit protection... you can calculate the minimum power requirement of the resistor from ohms law, if you know it's a 5V signal... P=V^2/R so for 5V and eg 100ohms. P=25/100=0.25W... so if you go below 100ohms, get a higher rated resistor, above that, 1/4W is fine... though I would tend to build in a little margin to allow for Chinese manufacturing quality of the components you use!
