Maybe you would like it, it is a documentary about urban planning and how more cities are doing these kinds of things to facilitate less car dependence and a better fit for humans. Some striking video images from asia in particular, but it doesn't really have as many answers as it suggests...

One thing that I have found is that with kids, activities can be scattered all over a city, so unless the city is very dense and you have exactly what you want nearby or excellent point to point transit other than a car, well then you need a car. Think about a kid playing baseball. Sure, maybe a house league will always have games right nearby... but then they get better and compete and have to travel to other team's fields all over the city. Without a car, that really adds time!

Some people can do it even with kids, but they usually value the "not needing a car" above doing things that they might have done with a car (eg let's just stick to house league baseball). The car sharing systems sometimes work for some people.
