In DC the number of transport options in astonishing. Sure I can walk, take my bike, metro, taxi, or bus, but there is also an incredible bike share program that covers the whole city, and car share programs that meet various needs (car2go to get around town, zipcar for out of town, etc.), and of course there's uber. With amazon and grocery and shopping delivery services you don't really need the car for shopping. I love my Saab and have had it for 15 years so it's not going anywhere, and while I love the freedom a car provides I don't really consider having it to be a practical consideration at this point. And most places have so much traffic now that driving isn't really a joy for most of us very often. Even a lot of midsized cities have surprisingly good transport options these days. We noticed the impact of technology on the car, but in many ways it's been more incredible in its impact on other types of transit. A lot of people stubbornly have a car because they can (got to drive two miles to go jogging at the gym after all) but us urban elitists have to remember that a car is a reality of life for most folks outside of cities and certain 'enlightened' towns. Even in 'car hating' Europe outside of the cities everyone has a car, because you need one, even when it's at much higher cost than here.
