Circumstances and preference are of course important factors, but I'll take a spare tire any day... preferably a "real" one, otherwise a donut.
The flat tires I've had are split about 50/50 between things like nails and screws which a compressor might have fixed temporarily and damage due to potholes for which a compressor would be useless. A usable spare tire "saved the day" in all those circumstances, and in each case got me home instead of just to a nearby tire store that most likely would not have the exact tire I need.
But as other posters have indicated, the usefulness of a spare is zero if there's no air in it!
