We cut the TV part of the cord many years ago. Unfortunately there is no viable alternative here for broadband. Comcast was quite reliable, but $50 for the basic Internet is outrageous.
1) What modem parameters must be met to buy our own device and save $10 per month?
They have a list of devices at mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com. We still use a 13 year old Motorola Surfboard, which I originally installed from their self-install kit. It is more than sufficient for our 6-up/1-down Mb/s "plan".
3) We live 35-40 miles from Detroit, maybe 50 miles from most of the major network broadcast antennas north of town. Are exterior Digital TV antennas available or are they all interior rabbit ears type? If exterior antennas are available, will I need a rotator (like the good old days) to get good signal strength on all channels?
We are about 40 miles from Mt Ascutney antennas, in the valley with no direct view of the mountain. Unless rain- or snowstorm, we get good reception with simple indoor rabbit ears from Radioschack. Though it's been a while since we watched anything. MSNBC is in Full HD, public TV channels are either FullHD or HD. The only TV we watch these days is world news from France24 (available in English and French) -- this is done by using Youtube app on a TV, and France24 is available live on Youtube in HD. We also use Google Cast (HDMI dongle plugged into TV) and that enables broadcast of all kinds of content from Android phones/tabs, Chrome OS devices or Chrome browser from any computer on home network. France24 have a decent Android app, so that can be used to cast to TV as well. I would imagine other TV channels/networks might have something similar.
4) Can the TV pick up signal from our N type router? Will I need a higher speed modem for the TV to receive wireless signals? Will I need to retain the separate cable line running through the wall to the TV to receive the Hulu/Netflix/Amazon signals?
Within the same room your TV should have no problem connecting to your WiFi router. This will provide Internet connectivity to Hulu/Netflix/Amazon apps on the TV. With 6Mb/s down we can watch Netflix in FullHD. You don't need the coax to the TV for this. You can also have an ethernet cable between the TV and router (for faster access to DLNA media servers on your home network, for example).
5) Can I re-use the TV's existing thru-wall co-ax to bring the Digital Signal into the house without adding a new hole through our new exterior siding?
You could use it to feed external antenna to your TV.
