Don't go to a teaching hospital in July, even August Posted by don_young [Email] (#815) [Profile/Gallery] (more from don_young) on Fri, 20 May 2016 01:05:42 In Reply to: Re: Questions about ablation surgery for afib, Dennis_MA, Thu, 19 May 2016 15:30:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Residencies begin nationwide every year on July 1, so if you decide to have the procedure performed in July or August the new cardiology residents will have little experience but actually may be the ones threading the catheter up your femoral artery. Of course, they'll be under close supervision by the attending interventional cardiologist but why increase the risk if you can reduce it by having it done in June or postponing it until October -- in fact, very often you may _think_ the procedure was performed by your doctor or chief resident when in fact the "newbies" were giving it a try.
In addition, the institution really makes a difference since your post-op care and recovery are performed & monitored by the nursing staff. The more the procedure has been performed at Hospital X, the more likely the staff has experience in dealing with some associated rare event. The saying around Scott's town is if you need a heart transplant go to Stanford Hospital, but if you need your appendix removed go to Sequoia Hospital, the local non-teaching institution.
