The best tires to the rear thing applies mostly to tires that are between somewhat and pretty well worn - with front wheel drive you'll get traction even if baldies are put there, but as you point out the rear end can easily break loose.
With the AWD drive setup it is always best to have 4 tires the same size and close in treadwear as well. So that's why I would put the better tires in the front and leave them until their wear gets near to matching the rears, the assumption being the rear have decent amount of treadwear.
