SUVs...my opinions... Posted by Andrew [Email] (#1013) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Andrew) on Wed, 21 Feb 2001 20:55:58 In Reply to: Agrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!, John A>, Wed, 21 Feb 2001 16:18:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK, I'll admit it. There are two SUVs and one Saab in my garage. The 9-3, a 4Runner and a Jeep WRangler. BUT... I can justify my reasons for SUV purchasing. I like to drive off road. I do it often and I do it responsibly. The Wrangler is an absolute blast off of the pavement. I've done some modifications to make it better off road and I love it. The 4Runner was purchased as a highway trips car that is taken off road when I go to places like the Rocky Mountains, Arkansas and Arizona/New Mexico. It's something I enjoy.
But, I couldn't justify buying an SUV that I didn't take off road. Especially a 4x2. Unless I had a really bonafide reason for having an SUV, something like a Saab or Audi wagon (with quattro) could get me most places I need to go with comfort, space and performance. My SUVs have little in the way of performance, although the 4Runner is, next to a Grand Cherokee, the closest thing to an off road sports car. (Oh, don't give me this BMW X5/Merc ML55 stuff... those things can't and don't go off road).
This new Unimog type thing sounds great for me. As long as it doesn't become another Hummer where it's the fashion statement vehicle for too many owners. Don't get me wrong the Hummer has awesome capabilities, but too many owners spit polish theirs and ask for road tires!
I like the way SUVs are going... more carlike. That will make them safer for the drivers and for other cars. Plus better fuel economy and better performance. What I don't like is that real truck-based SUVs with off road capability are moving to be more carlike, too. Those of us who like to off road are going to have fewer choices in the future. Jeep says that the Liberty is great off road stock, and I don't doubt it, but what kind of aftermarket equipment is availabe for an independent suspension? Not much. Just hope the whole SUV world doesn't go this way. Right now the "off roader-ok" SUVs are Land Rovers (bar Freelander), Jeeps, Toyotas (Land Cruiser, 4Runner), Lexus (LX470- frou frou Cruiser)...
Oh well, enough ranting for me! Enjoy the pic. Belongs to a guy in Houston, nice Jeep, IMO.
