A client wanted an Unimog. Don't ask why, but he wanted one. The client was a wealthy eccentric type. In any case, he had to have one. As his lawyer who handles his shipping and transportation business, and is an auto enthusiast, he figured I could get him one, no expense paid.

I bought him a surplus Unimog from the Bundeswehr. There are many configurations: stake bed, funkwagen (with an enclosed van type structure on the back), hard top, folding top on cap, etc. The list is endless. He decided on a funkwagen with folding cab top and a troop transport version with a canvas cover.

The engines were 2.2 litre MB gasoline, although diesels were available. The engines in these vehicles were the same blocks as MB car engines, so parts etc are not a problem. I got them for a little over 3000 dollars a piece. Arranged shipping and insurance for 1500 per, and entered them into the US as Service Vehicles, which had, If I remember correctly, a 3.5% tarrif attached, which was lower than any other automotive tarrif. The MB dealer then rebuilt the carbs and renewed dead rubber parts. There are other various and sundry costs, such as commissions for freight forwarders and customs brokers. In the end, 5400 a piece. My fee was about 22,000 dollars. I have not seen these vehicles since, but they were pretty cool, especialy with the Bundeswehr markings and Grey NATO camo paint.

Moral of the story: What the hell are people thinking, paying 84,000 for such a monstrosity, that you can have for a mere 5400 bucks!!! These things are scary big, and should not be allowed on the road as passenger vehicles!
